Ilian Iliev - CEO & Founder

Education: PhD Candidate (Cantab), MCom (Wits), BA Honours (Wits)

Entrepreneurial Experience:
(2006-present) co-founder and CEO of CambridgeIP Ltd
(2004-2005) co-founder and joint-CEO of DiagnovIS Ltd, an award-winning medical instrumentation firm, developing a diagnostic tool for neglected infectious diseases (1997-2001) co-founder and past MD of Satipimpex c.c., a 100+ employee electrical industry company operating in Southern Africa.

Strategy & Policy Consulting:
(2004-present): Strategy and innovation consulting for the senior leadership of a Top 5 Global Corporate Law firm
(2001-2003): Engagement in various consulting projects for the UK, South African and Bulgarian public sector on innovation policy.

Publications and Media Profile:
Ilian is soon submitting a PhD at the Judge Business School, Cambridge University on the topic of Innovation Finance. His publishing track record includes chapters in academic books and the popular media on the topics of science-industry technology transfer, financing of innovation, and innovation in the legal profession. He is a regularly invited speaker in forums on innovation in the legal industry, including a 2007 initiative by the Law Society of England and Wales on measuring law firm performance and innovation (details).

Quentin Tannock - Chairman & Founder

Education: LLB(Hons);LLM(Cantab);ACIArb
Quentin has trained in Roman Dutch, Common Law and International Law in Harare, Zimbabwe and in Cambridge, UK.

Entrepreneurial Experience:
(2006-present) co-founder of CambridgeIP.
(1994–present) established several businesses including the online complaints resolution hub www.getclosure.co.za

Miranda Weston Smith - Associate Consultant

Miranda joins CambridgeIP’s team to support our relationships with University Technology Transfer Offices in the UK and beyond. Miranda has 20 years’ experience of working with emerging technology businesses, and a track record of commercialising early stage life sciences technology.   From 2000-2007, at Cambridge Enterprise, Miranda evaluated technologies, negotiated licences and other agreements, and worked with researchers to start companies. While there she was also responsible for co-ordinating technology commercialisation for projects funded by the Cambridge-MIT Institute.  From 1992-2000, she was a consultant in technology transfer, carrying out technology audits, advising on the development of science parks, initiating the UK’s annual survey of technology transfer, and co-founding Cambridge Network with Herman Hauser.  At the seed capital firm, Cambridge Research and Innovation Limited (1987-1992) she identified and invested in early stage technology businesses.  Miranda has edited and co-edited nine scientific books.  She is an MA (Cantab) in Natural Sciences, University of Cambridge, Fellow of the Linnean Society, and Member of the US Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM).

Arthur Lallement - Associate

Arthur joins CambridgeIP’s team to engage in our research activities in the life sciences, as well as supporting our North America business development out of Boston. In his past work Arthur led the execution of a turnaround strategy for a high-growth international chemicals industry company, with sites in France and California. He helped start-up a biochemical division by gathering a strong team, forecasting the company activity in South-East Asia and Latin America and implementing the business plan. While working on his MSc at Guy’s Hospital, King’s College he found the best protocol to extract the streptococcal antigen I/II (SA I/II), a major cell surface glycoprotein of Streptococcus mutans from strawberry leaves to mass produce it. Arthur is also involved in several sailing communities and is a connoisseur of fine wine.

Elizabeth Hudson - Executive PA

Elizabeth Hudson joins CambridgeIP as Executive PA to Ilian Iliev (CEO) and Quentin Tannock (Chairman), taking responsibility for many aspects of administration, including client liaison, marketing support and looking after the CIP Team.  Elizabeth has over 10 years' experience of working at Director level as PA for both Blue Chip and start up companies, for pharmaceutical and aerospace sectors in the UK.  She latterly worked in the Venture Capital world at Amadeus Capital Partners Ltd for the CEO of the Seed Funds.

Advisors

Ian Collins

Ian Collins is a mechanical engineer who has led the creation of two successful businesses built around powerful IP positions. In 1998 Ian established Absolute Sensors Ltd. to exploit a novel non-contact position sensing technology, and in 1999 he led its sale to Synaptics Inc, the Californian leader in input technologies for mobile devices. For the last 4 years Ian has been working with the founders of Light Blue Optics, which has unique IP enabling the manufacture of miniature video projectors. Ian is currently chairman of LBO and has led it through several funding rounds raising over £16M.

Ian has worked in extensively in both public and private sectors and has several patents in his name in diverse technology fields. Prior to setting up ASL Ian was Operations Director of Scientific Generics (now Sagentia) and was responsible for the management of their IP portfolio.

Walter Herriot

Walter has been Director of St John’s Innovation Centre Cambridge since 1990. Prior to that he worked at Barclays Bank and was instrumental in helping facilitate the establishment of the Cambridge Phenomenon in it’s crucial start up stage from 1978-1985. In 1999 Walter received an OBE for “Service to businesses in the East of England”.

Walter was Cambridge Evening News Businessman of the Year in 2001. He is a visiting Professor at the University of Hertfordshire. In 2007 he received the Queens Award for Enterprise Promotion.

Ralph Poole

Ralph Poole has extensive executive experience leading Knowledge Management, Executive Education, Business Research and consulting projects in global companies. He held senior executive positions in four of the world's premier management consulting and IT consulting firms: Boston Consulting Group, Bain &Company, Ernst &Young LLP, and Capgemini (a French IT consultancy). At Bain he was responsible for business research, knowledge management and learning from Associate Consultant through Partner. At Ernst &Young and Capgemini, he created the Centre for Business Knowledge and, as Chief Knowledge Officer, led the effort to combine Knowledge, Learning and Methods to improve consultant skills, make learning delivery cost effective and to guide the efficient execution of projects. With projects of this magnitude, all of his interventions involve technology implementation and significant change management components. Ralph is an expert at managing change in large geographically dispersed global organizations. In addition, Ralph led new product and service innovation programs in global companies and now consults and trains on implementing innovation strategies.
