24 January, 2012: CambridgeIP research reveals latest innovation trends in the integration of desalination with renewable energy
The World Intellectual Property Organization has this month published a report authored by CambridgeIP examining the latest trends in innovation, technology ownership and geographical focus in the field of desalination technology, with a special focus on desalination systems using renewable energy
CambridgeIP's research found that from a total of 4551 patent families around desalination technologies, more than 20% refer to integration with a renewable energy source. Thermal energy integration with desalination has seen the most patenting activity, accounting for more than 80% of the patent families relating to renewable energy integration with desalination.
13 January, 2012: UK government grants will secure a step-change in the way science literature and intellectual property (IP) intelligence is developed and accessed.
The UK government’s Technology Strategy Board (TSB) has awarded grants to CambridgeIP to build on the company’s exceptional work in meeting the strategic information needs of R&D intensive organisations around the world.
CambridgeIP has already launched "Proof of Market" and "Proof of Concept" projects on the back of the TSB grants. The interactive projects are open to participation by business users in all industries and of all sizes – CambridgeIP is already working with end users including Fortune 500 companies and SMEs under the projects. To complete the projects CambridgeIP will be using leading technology providers in the cloud storage and literature search spaces, including Amazon Web Services (AWS).
16 December, 2011: Exploiting carbon flatland – Graphene patenting intensifies
As the UK government invests into supporting graphene research, the patent activity of UK universities lags behind that of their global peers according to research by CambridgeIP published in Nature Materials.
CambridgeIP has analysed the graphene patent landscape with a particular focus on the impact of universities and academic institutions. CambridgeIP's graphene patent landscape, reviewed in an article in Nature Materials "Exploiting Carbon Flatland", indicates that university collaborations with industry and industrial sponsorship of university research are common in the graphene space. Many universities around the world have been successful in developing graphene technologies and then licensing out graphene patents covering these technologies to industrial players.
First Solar's patenting activities have largely outstripped that of its key competitors in Europe and China. CambridgeIP's analysis reveals a patent portfolio of 337 patents and patent applications, with more than 100 filed in 2010. The analysis confirms First Solar's technology leadership in the CdTe-based Solar PV space, and identifies key collaborations and licensing partners. However, the analysis revealed a weak patent coverage in Asia. This may prove to be a strategic weakness, as the Asian markets for Solar PV grow in size, and local manufacturing capabilities develop. The research identified a number of Chinese organisations who have been patenting in the CdTe Solar PV technology.
The report is available for purchase through CambridgeIP’s Knowledge and Innovation platform Boliven.com and through Bloomberg’s Premium Research and Data Platform BMART
